“True organisation has eluded me for most off my working life as an author and journalist. My bookcases groaned under the weight of books, magazines and trays overflowing with papers labelled Sort or Action or Go Through, or even Urgent! Most of the time I hardly dared look at them. Box-files bulged with letters, leaflets, cuttings and handouts that I hadn’t looked at in years.

My banking and tax matters were the only remotely efficient piece of filing in the whole set-up. That’s because I slung the whole lot - bills, invoices, receipts, statements and chequebooks - into one large drawer, then spent three agonising days each year, as the tax deadline approached, trying to make sense of them before sending them to my (very patient) accountant.

From time to time I would attempt to at least clear my desk - usually by shovelling everything on it into yet another filing tray which I’d somehow find room for on a bookshelf or even the floor. Disorder on this scale doesn’t just inhibit the day’s work; it clutters the brain and exhausts all creative energy. I would feel tired just sitting down at my desk in the morning.

One evening my husband (whose study, maddeningly, is always pin-neat) flung over a page from the local paper, saying ‘Maybe this is what you need?’ It was an article about a woman who came round and de-cluttered you. I’d heard of experts like this and they all seemed terrifying, yet the accompanying photo showed a friendly, unintimidating-looking young woman. I checked the website which was very clear and made up my mind that I would go for it.

Today I sit at a clean, uncluttered desk. I open the post as soon as it arrives and either recycle it, act on it or file it in newly-labelled box files. Books sit neatly on the shelves and I may even buy a peace lily to adorn this wonderful space.

What did it take to achieve this new working life? Two planning sessions, a few hours of sorting through drawers, filing trays and box files and two days of working alongside calm, encouraging Lorraine, as order slowly emerged around me.

This service was brilliant and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Stream Organising to friends and colleagues. It took very little time to complete the job yet it has transformed my quality of life and freed up my mind.

“On a Sunday morning in early spring Lorraine went up into my rather disorganised loft and within two hours she had streamlined the area, by gathering together all loose items and re-packing boxes and suitcases. She taught me how to use a PDA, then set it up for me, which included arranging for someone to update my computer operating system to allow this to work. She really showed me what was possible.

Since the session, I get a reminder of appointments, and this has more than once avoided my personal trainer showing up at the door with me in full flow writing a report in my underwear (please note I run a business from home)!

“When we left for New Zealand for a temporary work contract that was all it was supposed to be, temporary! After 3 months we decided we wanted to stay as my partner’s job had been extended indefinitely, it all seemed pretty easy. We decided to sell one of our houses in England and invest in a property in Wellington. It all sounded straight forward enough until we had an actual offer on the house. I was 7 months pregnant at the time and it was impossible for me to return to England to sort out the sale.

Suddenly I was faced with such questions as how am I going to pack my things? How will we ship the furniture? And what on earth is in my loft! She listed and checked everything with me and then boxed and separated everything for shipping, charity and recycling collections.

The service also included sorting and organising the sale of things that we didn’t need which was a nice little bonus for our new start in a different country. Shipping quotes were also organised and our house was prepared for the people who had purchased it to move in.

“If you have ever felt paralysed by your paperwork, distracted by clutter, or simply unable to find anything, then Lorraine is the lady to call.

As an interior designer who works from home I really appreciate the benefits of a calm, relaxing environment. My home was lovely, apart from one small flaw – PAPER! Whether it was the piles of brochures enthusiastically collected from trade shows and still sitting in their carrier bags months later, or the filing hidden away in boxes - the problem was getting too big to even begin to tackle.

I met Lorraine at my BNI meeting and was impressed by her dedication. When I heard she was a professional organiser I think my words were something like: “You must be an angel sent down from heaven to help me”….!!
Anyway, not long afterwards, here’s what happened
Phase 1: Lorraine is like a hurricane but instead of destruction, she leaves a trail of tidiness in her wake. Within 2 hours one room is already tidy, apart from a huge pile of papers stacked on one table. But do not despair….
Phase 2: The secret to Lorraine’s efficiency is that she doesn’t just tidy, she creates organising systems especially for you so that there is a place for everything, whether it’s invoices, brochures, business cards or (hardest of all) miscellaneous filing. And more importantly – you can find it all later – instantly.

The proof of the pudding is that after Lorraine had sorted out my home office, all of her systems were still being used and my filing was being done immediately. I invited her back for a second visit and now my kitchen would rival a show home for uncluttered surfaces (Lorraine) and artfully arranged items (that bit was me!). My bathroom cabinets are now as regimented and pleasing to the eye as the inside of a pharmacy with drawers labelled – right down to the last hairgrip!

The process can be exhausting and you go through all sorts of emotions as you offload your clutter and mess and all that stale energy surrounding it. Lorraine is firm but kind and at the end of one day, you feel exhilarated at what you have achieved. Weeks after her visit, as I sit here typing and looking at my immaculate flat – I just wonder “why didn’t I get her sooner?!”

"My objective was to create efficient solutions in my office so that my admin was reduced and I could spend more time working ON the business and less time IN the business. Time management was starting to become an issue. I hated the chaos and mess as it made me feel stressed. All I wanted was for, my-self, colleagues and temp staff to be able to find and access files quickly and easily.

My consultant assessed my business systems and produced a thorough Action Plan for the company. Within two days, I had new systems in place to ensure I was super organised. The pile of business cards which I thought of as just cards containing someone’s details were now brought into a whole new’ business generating’ light. The consultant was also able to help me keep a better eye on my finances including my all-important cash flow - therefore justifying a reduced rate from my accountant!

The key issue of scheduling was also addressed. As a Fitness Trainer, delivering services to the door, a lot of time is spent away from my desk with clients and on the road. My consultant provided advice on IT solutions to eliminate the need for post-it notes and bits of paper to jot information down during a client session.
